ArtSpace Charter School receives ACCESS Grant to support enrollment

The Swannanoa-based ArtSpace Charter School is receiving a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the school announced. The grant is part of the state's ACCESS Program to provide enrollment opportunities at local charter schools for educationally and economically disadvantaged students.

The K-8 school, celebrating its 20-year anniversary in 2020, is one of 34 schools statewide to be awarded the grant.

"We believe in our vision and we are committed to removing barriers for all students to access our programs," said ArtSpace's executive director Sarena Fuller. "Education is our greatest form of advocacy and this grant is invaluable as we seek to empower all our young learners."

Funds will be be used to support enrollment for the underprivileged in addition to expanding opportunities for students, implementing weighted lotteries, enhancing transportation options, providing professional development for teachers and increasing access to technology and resources.

"This grant will expand the possibilities to creatively meet those foundation needs and grow opportunities for resilience in all our students, families, staff and community members," said counselor Tiffany Mead.

Charter schools operate away from the regulations governing district schools and are held accountable through a state assessment and accountability system. They must hold a lottery for seats if the school is full, and cannot discriminate in admissions.

ArtSpace is governed by a nonprofit board.
