Valley Rewind: Black Mountain Kindergarten

Special to Black Mountain News
Teachers of the Black Mountain Kindergarten pose with their students in 1951.

In celebration of Labor Day, this month the Swannanoa Valley Museum and History Center is highlighting photos from its collections that feature historic working people of the Swannanoa Valley. In this 1951 photo, teachers of the Black Mountain Kindergarten pose with their students on what looks to be a cold weather day. This kindergarten would have been privately run, as North Carolina public schools did not incorporate kindergarten education until the late 1960s. Then as now, educators in the many schools of the Swannanoa Valley provide a critical role in our communities. Can you identify the teachers or students in those photograph, or the location of the school? Email svmvolunteer@gmail.com or call 828-669-9566 to help the museum learn more about this image.
